Web communities and text messaging can expand our network of friends, business associates and contacts for legitimate purposes. However, others can also use them with less than friendly intentions, putting children at risk.

Here are some tips for using social networking sites safely:

• Gain an understanding of the site, its rules and how it maintains the information it collects.
• If children are using the PC, ensure that they understand what information should be private.
• Only post information that you are comfortable with others seeing.
• Use your PC's privacy/security settings to restrict who can access and post information on Web sites.
