As someone who has worked in communications and public relations most of my adult life, I am often consumed with trying to find the one thing that will pique the interest of a reporter, something that will get the name of the company I am working for in the news.

It isn’t easy. The news cycle is fickle, especially these days of the 24/7 news cycle. But then, once in a while, something remarkable falls in your lap and helps tell the story for you. Such a phenomenon recently occurred to Deluxe in the form of the Newsweek Most Trustworthy Companies list.

Out of the blue one day, Newsweek, one of the nation’s most venerable news publications, published its first-ever list of the most trusted companies in America. Having surveyed 50,000 people, the list focused on Fortune 1,000 companies across an array of sectors. And sure enough, listed at #11 among financial services companies, was Deluxe.

This was a great and unexpected honor, but by no means a mistake. Earning trust is one of our core values, and baked into our company’s DNA. Being in business for 107 years, we have learned a thing or two about how to please customers. As we have grown and evolved from the Original Payments Company and inventor of the checkbook to the Trusted Payments and Business Technology™ company we are today, dependability and trust has been essential to providing businesses of all sizes with the platforms and tools they need to grow and thrive.

The list of trustworthy companies is a who’s who of American business. In the financial services category, Deluxe is listed alongside institutions like American Express, Berkshire Hathaway and Visa. Regardless of category, what many of the names on the list have in common is that they have stood the test of time. Like these counterparts, Deluxe is trustworthy for a reason: because we have been able to provide our customers with consistent, reliable excellence for many, many years.

How does any company manage to stay in business for 107 years? Well, you have to learn to do a few things right. Not only do you change and evolve and transform, but you also listen to your customers. You understand what they need, when they need it and how to find solutions to the problems they don’t even know they have. And then you deliver – you say what you do and do what you say.

It’s an honor to be listed among the most trustworthy companies in America. It’s an honor that among 50,000 people, we were top of mind. And it’s an honor to be able to serve our customers each day. Sometimes, the news release just writes itself.
