About the Town
Just outside of Colorado Springs on the Arkansas River, Cañon City has a rich cultural heritage and fascinating geological history. It boasts vast open spaces from the plains to the Rocky Mountains, plus stunning views of the nearby Royal Gorge, a major tourist attraction. And with an elevation of 5,300 feet above sea level, Cañon City is “the Climate Capital of Colorado,” with temperatures generally 10 degrees warmer in winter than other nearby Colorado communities.
In addition to its natural beauty, the town prides itself first and foremost on its people. Cañon City has a population of approximately 16,000 people and nearly 4,000 families. As the town grows, there has been a slow economic transition from an agricultural community to a more diverse economy, including tourism, education, manufacturing, medicine and more. And they hope new additions like bike trails will make Cañon City even more sought-after as a mecca for mountain biking and whitewater rafting for visitors and residents alike.
Despite holding claim to the country’s longest Main Street, Cañon City needs help attracting people downtown to shop at its local businesses, especially in the “off season.” Community leaders are hoping that with marketing help and promotion from the Small Business Revolution, downtown will start to thrive and be able to weather the challenges of seasonality.
